Derek Stanley spent three years in the NFL running routes with Tory Holt and Isaac Bruce in St. Louis. He got advice and pointers from Henry Ellard -- but injuries interrupted all that.

Last season, after playing in two games with the Rams, Stanley was waived and football all of a sudden wasn't there for him.

On top of it, he was dealing with some injuries.

"2009 was a tough year for me," the 24-year-old said yesterday. "I had a lot of injuries, I had knee surgery and I didn't want to sit around and hope something would come up. I just wanted get up here and get back into playing football.

"Get my mind back into it, get my confidence back and my body and my legs and just play."

Stanley said he could have waited around until later this summer when NFL training camps open and maybe caught on with another NFL team, but he needed to get back doing what he loved -- as quickly as he possibly could.

"I want to play now. I don't want to wait until July and who knows what happens there. I just want to get back up here and get back in the swing of things."
