TORONTO - At Bishops, he went by “Tailwind.” After a record-setting performance at the 2010 CFL Evaluation Camp, they started calling him “The Afterburner.”

Brampton’s Steven Turner doesn’t really care what people call him, he just wants to play football and the Toronto Argos are going to give him that opportunity.

The Argos signed the 5-foot-11, 185 pound Brampton speedster Friday after selecting him in the CFL draft, 30th overall. He is the third of their CFL draft picks now under contract, joining No. 2 overall Joe Eppele and third-rounder Spencer Watt.

Turner opened plenty of eyes at the CFL camp, turning in March posting the fastest 40-yard sprint in camp history. The Chicago Bears were so impressed they brought him down for a mini-camp and while he didn’t stick with the team, Turner came back more motivated than ever.

‘Experience’

“Just the experience,” Turner said of what he took away from his weekend with the Bears. “I think it developed me a lot, just as a receiver alone. Hopefully I can transfer that to the CFL game.”

Argos head coach Jim Barker foresees using Turner in much the same way he employed Mike (Pinball) Clemons when Barker was the offensive coordinator in Toronto years ago. Back then, in order to best utilize Clemons’ speed, the Argos had him in a bit of a hybrid position between slotback and a running back coming out of the backfield as a receiver.

Turner is excited about the opportunity.

“My philosophy is, as long as you’re willing to work hard and keep developing your game, that’s how you’re going to prosper,” he said.

The Argos open camp June 5th with medicals but Turner and the rest of the first-year Argos will get going June 2 at rookie camp.
