Various reports last fall that Bart Andrus was being paid in the neighbourhood of $475,000 annually came as a surprise to the Argos' front office, two sources said.

Sources indicated the sum that was reported included the money owed to former head coach Rich Stubler, who was fired in September 2008 and replaced by Don Matthews. It's not known what the actual salaries were of Andrus and Stubler, but when the figure of $475,000 initially was reported, there was bafflement across the league.

Andrus in turn was canned in December after the Argos went 3-15. If the Argos got a do-over in January of last year, Andrus probably would not have been hired.

"I never got the feeling that Bart really connected with other people around the league and with the players and understanding the personnel," Argos president Bob Nicholson said. "I think Jim (Barker) brings a great relationship base with people around the league."
