Argos coach mum on Joseph's future

Jim Barker couldn’t give a straight answer when asked whether quarterback Kerry Joseph will be back with the Argos in 2010.

“We’re going to evaluate the entire roster,” the head coach said on his first day on the job. “My first order of business will be to get a staff in order. I believe there are a lot of quality CFL players in this organization.”

Barker added a few more thoughts before saying: “How was that for beating around the bush?”

Not bad. But if Barker knew Joseph was going to return for a third season in Double Blue, he probably would have said so.

At this point, it would be bigger news if Joseph did return than if he did not.

Many teammates figure they won’t play with him again, and after two disappointing seasons in Toronto, the Argos simply need to go in a different direction than Joseph, who is slated to make a reported $300,000 in 2010.

Neither Cody Pickett nor Stephen Reaves would appear to be a long-term solution. Finding a quarterback who can get the job done will be one of Barker’s biggest challenges.

Can Ricky Ray solve the Toronto Argonauts' quarterback woes in 2012?
