Robertson a bright light

REGINA -- Jamal Robertson is the Argonauts' exception to the offensive rule.

In a season run aground mostly because the passing game does not exist, Robertson has been piling up yards and should become the first Argos running back since Michael Jenkins in 2001 to rush for 1,000 yards.

Entering last night's game at Mosaic Stadium against the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Robertson had 859 yards in 13 games. It's more impressive considering the Argos had attempted the fewest rushes in the CFL before last night.

"We haven't run all year, so it's a testament not only to Jamal but to our offensive line," said fellow running back Jeff Johnson, who has helped Robertson gain yards by throwing big blocks.

"In a year as tough as it has been, we have not had a lot of positive aspects, and for Jamal to achieve that, it would be something we can be proud about."

Part of what makes Robertson successful -- at 5-foot-10 and 216 pounds, he is a little package of power -- is his ability to break the first tackle. It's uncommon to see Robertson brought down by the first defender that gets his paws on him. On 160 carries, Robertson has averaged 5.4 yards. Where Argos teammate Dominique Dorsey gets by on quickness, Robertson can plow right through people.

"When I was in college (Ohio Northern), my running backs coach always told me to make the first guy miss," Robertson, 31, said. "I've had linebackers tell me I'm hard to tackle. I try to run hard, that's all."

Thank goodness for Robertson, whose eight rushing touchdowns are the most on the ground for the Argos since Robert Drummond had 12 in 1997. Head coach Bart Andrus' original plan to build an offence around the passing game did not materialize.

"He has lived up to expectations," Andrus said.

While it would be a nice feather in Robertson's cap, he was more concerned with sharing the possibility.

"But it's not about me. I don't keep track of my yards. I'm really just trying to get yards to help get wins. It really does not matter to me."
