Argos offence takes a hit

P.K. Sam insists itís nothing serious.

But in a season where nothing has gone right for the Argos, the sight of Sam pulling up lame on a routine passing route was the last thing the last-place Argos needed.

Whether Sam will suit up Friday against the visiting Calgary Stampeders isnít known.

The Argos were counting on Sam to help jump-start an offence that hasnít been able to find the end zone often enough to win.

Sam was practising with the Argosí first-team offence yesterday when he planed his foot and felt a slight twinge in his groin area.

The explosive slotback was recently cut by the Buffalo Bills, in part because Sam injured his quad.

He has been rehabbing and feels the groin overcompensated, thus causing the latest misstep.

ďIím not a doctor, but my opinion is that itíll be okay after I give it a few days rest," Sam said.

ďI donít think itís anything serious. I just want to make sure Iím 100%.Ē

Sam is familiar with quarterback Cody Pickett, having teamed up in Europe and last season in Toronto, when Sam was first exposed to three-down football.

The two have a chemistry, but Sam is new to Bart Andrusí offence and any time away from the practice field must be viewed as a setback.

If he canít go Friday, Sam is likely to make his return as an Argo on Labour Day in Hamilton.

Thereís no uncertainty hovering over Pickett, who is coming off a 326-yard passing game when he made his first start of the season in the Argosí 36-28 loss to B.C.

The Argos moved the ball, but could only produce one touchdown.

Pickett made his first start in the CFL last season, when the Argos played the Stamps in a home-and-home series.

Calgary won each game and Pickett threw for a combined zero touchdowns.

ďLike anyone else, as a quarterback you only get better the more reps you get," Pickett said.

While Pickett welcomed the teamís bye week as a means to heal some lingering aches, heís excited about getting back to business.

ďIím just anxious because weíre trying to get wins and get back on the right track.Ē

Having Sam, no doubt, would help. Now, the Argos just have to hope for the best.

Briefly

DB Byron Parker was fielding punts and kick-offs yesterday. Heís expected to dress Friday and to play primarily on special teams ... DT Adriano Belli had fluid removed from his knee and did not practise ... WR Hank Edwards and DE Ben Ishola have been released.
