Injuries add to insult for Argos

The Argonauts returned home from Calgary early yesterday looking to mend both their wounded pride and their wounded receiving corps.

And while first-year head coach Bart Andrus wasn't going to pin an embarrassing 44-9 loss to the reigning Grey Cup-champion Stampeders on the fact that the he lost three receivers -- Andre Talbot, Tyler Scott and Matt Lambros -- in the first half, the Boatmen's inability to adjust played a significant role.

COSTLY PICKS

Quarterback Kerry Joseph threw two second-half interceptions, both of which were returned for touchdowns. Joseph also was stripped of the ball while trying to pass out of the wildcat formation, and it too was run back for a Calgary major.

"If Kerry had to do it over again, he probably would have pulled it down," Andrus said of the fumble.

"But we were hurting. We were down to one Canadian wide receiver and stuck in one personnel group. At halftime, we were trying to come up with things. We had pulled the trigger in virtually anything we had in our four-receiver, two-back group.

"We were trying to come up with things, and what you saw was poor execution all the way around."

Talbot, making his first start of the season after missing the Argos' first two games with a back injury, hurt his ankle while making a first-quarter catch. Scott left the game after being rocked by Stamps safety Milton Collins. Lambros, playing in his home town, was helpd off in the second quarter after suffering what looked to be a knee injury.

It was the Argos' second loss in a row to a Western Conference foe after beating Hamilton in their season opener. For the Stamps, it was their first win after two losses.

"They were closer to showing what they were as a defending Grey Cup team than at any time this year," Andrus noted. "They played well and we played poorly. That combination is not going to be good."

The Argos will attempt to right the ship on Friday when they head to Winnipeg to face the Blue Bombers.
