Andrus remembers McNair

No one in Toronto is following the Steve McNair saga closer than Argonauts’ head coach Bart Andrus.

It was 10 years ago that Andrus was coaching the Tennessee Titans quarterbacks and guiding McNair to an appearance in the Super Bowl. With Andrus specifically aiding McNair to become a more dangerous thrower than runner, McNair and the Titans came within a yard of forcing overtime against the St. Louis Rams for the world championship.

Now, Andrus has been glued to reports of McNair’s homicide investigation, a possible murder-suicide involving the married, community-service oriented McNair and a 20-year-old waitress being described as his girlfriend.

If he could, Andrus would like to be in Nashville to offer support to McNair’s wife Mechelle, whom he also befriended during his time with the Titans.

“I also knew his mother and some of his brothers,” Andrus said yesterday at Argo practice in Mississauga. “My thoughts and prayers are with them.”

One of Steve’s brothers, Fred, quarterbacked the Argos during eight games in the 1991 season.

“Yesterday and the day before I was obviously following it very closely,” Andrus said. “Steve was a good friend and a part of my life as a coach. I was very close to him for a number of years.

“I obviously felt very bad about the situation and how his family is grieving.

“I haven’t heard yet when that (funeral) is going to take place. I would like to be in attendance, but I’m not going to do it at the expense of our team. There are other ways to pay your respects.”
