Argos extend QB Joseph

The Argonauts believe Kerry Joseph's difficult first year in Toronto was a one-off.

The Argos announced on Friday afternoon they have signed their No. 1 quarterback to a contract extension through 2010.

"Everything that has been done since last year makes me optimistic that we will have a lot of success this season," Joseph said. "The organization is going in the right direction and it's exciting to be a part of it."

Joseph was named the most outstanding player in the CFL in 2007 with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and then won the Grey Cup with the Roughriders that fall.

But following a trade to the Argos prior to last season, he did not get in a groove until a shot at the playoffs was out of reach.

One major factor working in Joseph's favour is that he won't have to be looking over his shoulder, unlike last season, when the quarterbacking fiasco that involved Michael Bishop was not solved until Bishop was traded to Saskatchewan in August. A revamped offensive line with Rob Murphy and Dominic Picard will help.

With 4,174 passing yards last year, Joseph joined Damon Allen as the only Argos quarterbacks to throw for more than 4,000 yards in the past 10 years. But Joseph's completion rate of 57.3% was among the lowest in the CFL.

With the quarterbacking controversy that enveloped the Argos last year, it's unlikely they would pursue Casey Printers, who was released by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Argos general manager Adam Rita is happy with the backup tandem of Reggie McNeal and Cody Pickett.

"I don't think so," Rita said when asked if he had any interest in Printers. "We have those two young guys behind Kerry and might bring in a fourth guy for camp. You never say never, but it does not look like it."

Meanwhile, former Argos defensive co-ordinator Kavis Reed has joined the Roughriders as the club's running backs coach and special teams co-ordinator. Reed was out of a job when new Argos head coach Bart Andrus hired his own staff.
