The Argonauts are considering Jim Fassel as a candidate to become their new head coach, Sportsnet reported on its website.

Fassel, a former head coach of the New York Giants, coached in Super Bowl XXXV with New York, losing to Baltimore. It recently became public that Fassel, who has been working as a colour commentator on NFL games, has expressed an interest in coaching the Oakland Raiders.

The Argos have been without a coach since Don Matthews walked away at the end of the regular season. Matthews guided the Argos to an 0-8 record after Rich Stubler was fired in September. Overall, the Argos were 4-14 and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2001.

Others who have been mentioned in the running for the Argos job include Calgary Stampeders offsensive co-ordinator George Cortez, former Saskatchewan Roughriders head coach Danny Barrett and B.C. Lions defensive co-ordinator Mike Benevides. Roughriders assistant Richie Hall also could be in the running. And there are some who think Argos CEO Michael (Pinball) Clemons, who has coached the Argos in the past, should not be discounted until a coach is named.

Argos co-owner David Cynamon has said in recent weeks that a new coach should be in place some time in January, though it could happen sooner.

The process could pick up steam next week once the Grey Cup is done.
