Suddenly, Eiben has time to kill

Kevin Eiben doesn't know what to do with himself.

The Argos linebacker expects to miss the next two games after suffering a partial tear of the medial collateral ligament in his left knee during a win Sunday over the Edmonton Eskimos.

Eiben, in six previous seasons with Toronto, missed just one game. That was in 2006 when a shoulder injury forced him out.

"This is all new to me," Eiben, 28, said. "I don't like going in the training room (for treatment). I try to get out of there as quickly as possible."

Will Eiben resort to watching soaps or other bad afternoon television?

"No, not me," he said with a laugh. "I'm not that type."

In place of Eiben, Adrian Mayes will make his first CFL start on Sunday in Saskatchewan against the Roughriders.

Head coach Rich Stubler does not figure on seeing Eiben in uniform for a while, but had to bite his tongue.

"I don't rule anybody out (for Sunday)," Stubler said. "With (Eiben), I don't know. He has been hurt and has played hurt."

TWO-SPORT ADDITION

If he flames out with the Argos, maybe receiver Todd Lowber can give Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo a call.

The Argos signed Lowber, a 6-foot-3, 202-pound New Jersey native who was on the New York Giants' practice roster last season, to the practice roster. A basketball player at Ramapo College, Lowber did not play football in high school or college. He was signed by the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent in April 2007, was released, then signed by the Giants.

With injuries to Andre Talbot (groin) and Bethel Johnson (ankle), the Argos needed a receiving body for practice.

"We don't have enough guys to practise with and other guys are having their legs run off," Stubler said. "We have guys running 100 plays a day, and we can't do that."

Said Lowber: "No matter what kind of game it is, it's an opportunity for me to show I can play at the highest level."

Stubler said both Talbot and Johnson are "close" to returning and could play on Sunday.
