Argos coach Mike (Pinball) Clemons didn't mince words yesterday when asked about the post-season aspirations of his struggling squad.

"If we win two of our next three games, we have a good chance to make the playoffs," Clemons said of his 2-5 squad.

Easier said than done.

Mired in a four-game losing funk, the Argos kick off a vital three-game run against Eastern Conference foes tomorrow when they meet the division-leading Blue Bombers (4-2) in Winnipeg. They then embark on a home-and-home series with the rival Hamilton Tiger-Cats, a key stretch that includes the always-electric annual Labour Day classic at Ivor Wynne Stadium.

CLASH

With starting quarterback Michael Bishop not expected to be back in the lineup before that Sept. 3 clash in Steeltown, the Argos season could be close to toast should they not record more than one win in the stretch.

"The world is not ending," Clemons said.

"If we win six of our last 11, we have a chance for the post-season. Seven more wins and we'll make the playoffs. Eight wins and we'll likely host a playoff game."

Of course, the Argos have been here before. Just one year ago, they stumbled to the same 2-5 start before going on an impressive 8-3 streak en route to gaining a playoff berth.

But receiver Tony Miles warned there is no guarantee history will repeat itself.

"Last year doesn't mean anything," Miles said. "Last year, we were a different team. We know it can be done but this team is still looking for its identity.

"We definitely are ready to make a push, however."

Miles returns to the lineup tomorrow after missing four games with a hamstring ailment, a welcome boost to Toronto's sputtering offence.

"I feel all right," Miles said. "I'm just trying to ease my way back into it."
