Off-season trade was Taylor-made

Taylor Robertson thought he would retire with the Calgary Stampeders but he got over the shock of being traded the day he walked into Toronto Argonauts headquarters.

Robertson started at right guard for three of his four seasons with the Stamps but was sent to Toronto for a first-round draft pick once Calgary signed veteran Bobby Singh in the off-season.

He has fit right in at right guard with the Argos and instantly felt part of their long-term plans.

"It's been really, really welcoming," said the 26-year-old.

"I didn't know how to react coming to a new team. I didn't know what it would be like playing with guys I got into fights with over the years."

Those players were the likes of Adriano Belli, Mike O'Shea and Michael Fletcher, all veteran players with the Argos, but they were the most welcoming.

It also didn't hurt that Robertson went to Hogtown with former Stamps offensive co-ordinator Steve Buratto, so learning the offence was a breeze.

He even became a part-time coach for his new teammates because Robertson played in Buratto's system for two seasons in Calgary.

"I've been able to help the guys out with the offence because Steve has his own quirks and terminology," Robertson said.

"Things people have never heard of before. They've also helped me around here, with things you take for granted, usually. All the stupid little things, how the training room work and schedule. They don't give you a manual for it. (Veteran lineman) Chad Folk and Jude St. John have been awesome, really great guys."

Moving to Toronto also worked better for Robertson's family.

His father, Bruce, and stepmom, Joan, live in Napanee, Ont., and can drive in for home games.

Argos head coach Michael (Pinball) Clemons said Robertson showed up with the maturity needed to become a team leader.

"He's very strong from his first meeting," Clemons said. "He's very confident and he knows what he wants, not just from football but out of life.

"Having someone so well balanced and adjusted is wonderful."
