Damon Allen could be on a short leash as the Argonauts starting quarterback on Thursday.
Word that Allen had beaten out Michael Bishop and Mike McMahon came on the weekend from new offensive co-ordinator Steve Buratto, but head coach Pinball Clemons gave a different version of events yesterday at practice.
"Our 2007 starter has yet to be determined," Clemons insisted. "There is a second guy who will play (against the B.C. Lions)."
Clemons indicated Allen was one of those men, while Buratto admitted he "probably" jumped the gun on his boss by naming the 43-year-old Allen.
The optics didn't look great, since Buratto has a previous relationship with Allen when both were in B.C.
"If Damon starts, it's because he won the job," Buratto said.
Clemons joked that if anything, the ongoing debate about the most important job on offence "might sell a few more tickets ... we encourage everyone on our team to speak out. Opinions are good."
Allen says this season's camp has had a different dynamic.
"It has been the first time in 23 years for me that the job is up for grabs," Allen said. "All we can do is practice hard every day."
