The offer is on the table, now all the Argos need is for Damon Allen to sign it.

The two sides appear to be inching closer to the 43-year-old free agent returning to the club and battling for the starting quarterback position.

Club officials said that Allen has yet to sign a deal but the team is hopeful something can be done this week.

Rogers Sportsnet reported yesterday that Allen had reached an agreement in principle to return for a fifth season with the CFL club.

Allen became a free agent on Feb. 15. Since then the team has signed two QBs with NFL experience -- Mike McMahon, who started 14 games with the Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions, and Tom Arth, who once was an understudy to Peyton Manning with the Indianapolis Colts.

Also expected to fight for the starting position are Michael Bishop, who came on in replacement of Allen in two playoff games this past season, and Eric Crouch.

JOB UP FOR GRABS

Argos head coach Michael Clemons, and vice-president of football operations Adam Rita, have both made it clear that the starter's job will be up for grabs in training camp.

A team spokesman said Allen and Argos officials are expected to meet sometime in the next couple of days.

Last season, Allen completed 198 of 335 pass attempts (59.1%) for 2,567 yards with 12 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
