St. John lined up for Ricky

From his position in the trenches, Jude St. John has his ideas on what can drive the Argos offence to playoff success:

Run Ricky Run. And you too John Avery.

The veteran guard, who was named to the CFL East Division all-star squad this week, would like to see a lot of Ricky Williams and Avery charging by him tomorrow.

"We need to run the ball for a couple of reasons," St. John said yesterday. "One is because I think it's what makes our offence tick. But another reason is we need to keep our defence off the field.

"We believe if we can keep our defence rested, they're going to shut down any offence in the league. If we leave them out there too long, they're going to get tired."

That was no more in evidence than late in last week's 24-20 loss to Montreal when Alouettes running back steamrolled them in the fourth quarter.

LONG DRIVES

"A couple of long drives by them coincided with a couple of two and outs for us,' Argos coach Michael (Pinball) Clemons said yesterday "You need to possess the ball a little bit to get your defence a chance to rest."

As the Argos offence has struggled this season, the O-line has shouldered an inordinate amount of blame. But that line can't be all bad considering it includes two other East all-stars in tackles Bernard Williams and Jerome Davis.

"When you have the running backs that we have, when you have the quarterback and receivers that we have, people assume that you are going to be successful," St. John said.

"And when you're not, the blame is usually going be be put on the offensive line.

"But I've maintained from Day One, if we have a running back who gets the ball 15 times a game, I think we can pound the ball."

BRIEFLY

Argos corner Byron Parker was yesterday named the CFL's defensive player for October ... With a Wiggles concert booked at the Rogers Centre today, neither team will get a chance to see the field prior to the game. The Argos will have a team walkthrough in Mississauga while the Bombers won't bother.
