Veteran Argo lineman Bernard Williams was released on bail today after making his first appearance on a charge of sexual assault.

Toronto police said a victim was sleeping in her home near Rathburn Rd. and the 427 on Tuesday around 6 a.m. when a man came into her bedroom and sexually assaulted her.

She woke and escaped and was later treated and released at hospital, police told the Sun.

Williams was arrested today. He is due back in court on Sept. 29.

The Toronto Argonauts issued a statement regarding the issue.

"We believe in the presumption of innocence as Bernard faces this charge in the courts," it said. "If requested, the authorities will have our full cooperation for their investigation.

"We will have no further comment on this case until the matter is concluded."
