A few weeks ago, longtime Argos' season-ticket holder and FAN 590 morning host Don Landry looked ahead on the CFL sched and invited me to join him for last weekend's Lions/Argos tilt at Rogers Centre.
Don knew when he made the invitation that I was born and raised on the B.C. Lions, so he invited me with the understanding that I would pull for my team.
One of many cool things about Mr. Landry, besides his unwavering support of the Argos, is how he expects you to support your team equally as strongly -- even in his arena -- and, in fact, will taunt you if you fail to cheer in enemy territory.
So cheer I did.
After the first Lions' touchdown, I was pretty quiet and stayed seated. Don pointed out immediately that I was akin to a barnyard animal that clucks and lays eggs.
When the second TD was scored, I stood with my arms in the air, marking the event with the universal signal.
This is when "the boo birds" began to chirp in section 235 and we revelled in it. This is football!
The guys behind us were roughing me up with a few good-natured jabs, good clean fun that made the experience even better.
It was obvious by the third major for the Leos that this would be my last celebration, regardless of what Landry said. Most of the Argo fans reacted like I would have at BC Place; with a smile and calls to "sit down!"
But there was this one man who was dead serious in his disdain for my presence. His look of disgust when Don and I went up for ice cream in the third quarter spoke volumes but apparently it wasn't enough as he spat, "You're gonna get a nasty e-mail for bringing her, Landry."
So a little message to "That Guy": Dude, chill.
Friendly competition is what makes sitting in the stands fun. Being obnoxious crosses the line from good sportsmanship to bad. Save that stuff for the taunting in the playoffs -- as Don would say, "Jodester, do your remember 2004? Grey Cup? Argos 27, BC 19?"
