REGINA -- The Argos' flirtation with Doug Flutie nearly ended with a completed pass.
According to Flutie's brother, Darren, the Argos and the former CFL standout came within a whisker of playing in last night's game against the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Darren Flutie broke the news during the CBC's pre-game show, while head coach Michael (Pinball) Clemons confirmed the team's interest in the aftermath of the Argos' 26-23 win over the Roughies.
The Argos made initial contact with Flutie four weeks ago after Damon Allen broke a finger in his hand.
As early as last Saturday, Flutie was about to board a 5 p.m. flight for Toronto when negotiations fell through.
"There were just a lot of variables,'' Clemons said in explaining why the Flutie connection failed. "He had commitments. Our challenge was with salary management system. Does it do something to Spergon's (Wynn) confidence?
"There were variables on both sides ... I wouldn't be honest if I said I wanted to see Doug Flutie retire in an Argo uniform and be able to give a tribute to him."
