The Argos have dipped into the National Football League's reservoirs to sign two interesting defensive prospects -- linebacker Lee Woodall and defensive end Erik Flowers.

Woodall, 36, played in the NFL from 1994-2001, the first six years with San Francisco, which drafted him in the sixth round, and one each with Carolina and Denver. He played in two Pro Bowls, as a starter in 1995 and two years later as an addition.

Argos assistant general manager and director of player personnel, Greg Mohns, has no concerns about Woodall's long absence from the game. All he needed was one look at the player during a workout in Florida to ease his doubts.

"As soon as you saw him, you knew the son of a gun was in shape," Mohns said of the 5-foot-11 1/2-inch, 240-pounder. "He does not look like he hasn't played in a few years. Obviously you could tell he'd been training. He might not be in game shape, but that won't be hard to come by. It will be interesting. He is definitely the consummate pro in talking about his work habits and game preparation. It's going to be interesting. We'll see what happens."

Flowers, a first-round pick of Buffalo in 2000, played his first two seasons with the Bills, then had one year with Houston and two with St. Louis.

"I've been tracking him for several years," Mohns said of the 28-year-old, who stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 273 pounds.

Mohns compared Flowers, in stature, to defensive end Jonathon Brown, another former NFLer who is about to enter his third season in the Canadian Football League. "He's considered a little undersized (by NFL standards) and both have about the same frames. Erik's outstanding off the edge."

Mohns predicts both players will make an impression.

"I guarantee both of these guys will come to war and attempt to win a championship," he said.

With the signing of Flowers, the Argos have four former first round NFL picks: Running back John Avery, receiver R. Jay Soward and offensive lineman Bernard Williams.
