Goodspeed picks Blue over Busch

Had the Winnipeg Blue Bombers not called, Dan Goodspeed would be a jack man right now.

But they did and that means the Bombers right tackle will resume his battle tomorrow with a long-time foe who plays for the Toronto Argonauts.

Goodspeed and Argos defensive end Eric England had quite a personal battle going when the teams met in August at Rogers Centre. They were usually seen tussling whether the whistle had blown or not.

Their on-field contempt for one another dates back to 2001 when they faced off in the XFL.

"He's a hard hitter," Goodspeed said. "He wants to hit. Some ends like to come around the edge. He'd rather get into you and be physical. That's why me and him usually lock up."

Goodspeed's steady play has been a primary reason for the Bomber O-line's revival this season. And had he not come north in early July, he'd likely be hauling the jack -- called a jack man -- for a stock car racing team in the Busch Series, a NASCAR minor-league circuit.

Team Rensi Motorsports had invited Goodspeed and his wife, Amy, to the Pepsi 400 in Daytona Beach, Fla., to do some job shadowing of the pit crew, but he decided to join the Bombers instead.

"They were looking for bigger guys that played in the NFL that could move, offensive linemen who could carry the jack around," Goodspeed said.

"We were heading that way, but luckily I didn't, because I'm happy to be up here."

NEW-LOOK D: Joe Tuipala won't be the only defensive player making his Bomber debut tomorrow.

Tuipala, the middle linebacker who will take over for Ryland Wickman, will be joined by DB Anthony Malbrough, who was acquired from Calgary in an Oct. 3 trade for safety Wes Lysack.

Malbrough will start at halfback, which means Stanford Samuels will shift to dime back to replace Santino Hall, who's out for the season with an ACL tear.

DT Doug Brown returns to the lineup in place of DT Martin Lapostolle, who hurt his back lifting weights earlier this week.

The only change on offence is WR Darnell McDonald for WR Chris Brazzell, who is out with a deep leg bruise.

WR Gilles Colon (quadriceps) will miss his third straight game, which means Scott Robinson will stay on as the fifth receiver.
