Andre Rison is in a Georgia jail for failure to pay child support, but his business manager believes the Argos receiver has been set up.

Rison, who joined the Argos midway into the 2004 season, was sentenced to jail on Wednesday pending payment of $127,000 US he owes to a woman, Raycoa Handley, with whom he has two sons.

Rison was sentenced to an additional 20 days in jail for violating a court order to pay $3,500-a-month child support for his 16-year-old and 18-year-old sons since August 2002.

Rison's manager, Bill Thies, said the player agreed in September to appear at a Decatur, Ga., court room on Wednesday to take care of his legal situation.

"We understood that the warrant (for his arrest) had been set aside because he had started to send (Handley) money out of his cheque," Thies said.

Rison received a prorated $60,000 salary from the Argos. Thies said Rison paid half of his net salary to Handley -- about $10,000 US.

"For her to grab him and say he is still in contempt when they'd already agreed in early September to set that aside was to us a complete ambush," Thies said. "We came to settle the matter and to determine what was going to have to be owed for the future."

The Argos were aware of Rison's plight.

"(Rison) has got to figure out his own situation," Argos coach Pinball Clemons said. "There is no guarantee that Andre will be an Argo again. We will have discussions with his people."

Rison, who spent 12 seasons in the NFL, appeared in five games with the Argos -- losing his starting spot before the playoffs and sitting out the Grey Cup, which Toronto won -- catching 14 passes for 174 yards and one touchdown.

Thies said Rison wants to return to the Argos.

He said Rison has been unfairly portrayed, that he was not a deadbeat dad and has supported the children financially.
