Bruce getting another shot

Arland Bruce relished the team victory and then took time to reflect on his own achievement.

It was three years ago here at Montreal's Olympic Stadium when Bruce's Bombers lost to Calgary in the Grey Cup.

At the time, Winnipeg boasted a powerful offence and an upstart receiver in Bruce.

"I never told any of the guys here about that game but I'm certainly going to now that we've won," Bruce said in a jubilant Argos locker room after Toronto shocked the host Als 26-18 in the Eastern final.

"The memory of that loss is still fresh in my mind. I now have a chance to erase it and create a new memory."

With the win, the Argos advance to the Grey Cup and a meeting with the B.C. Lions.

The Argos would not have escaped the hostile Big O had it not been for Bruce's brilliance.

He wasn't alone but the Argos defence was magnificent, while veteran quarterback Damon Allen managed a well-conceived offence.

"This is a team that is growing stronger and stronger," said Bruce, whose cousin in St. Louis Rams Pro Bowler Isaac Bruce. "We executed and now we're going to the show."

When Jonas Lewis gave the Als a 7-1 lead on a four-yard touchdown run, it was Bruce who returned the ensuring kickoff 97 yards for a major.

With the Argos poised to seize control early in the fourth quarter, it was Bruce's seven-yard touchdown reception that gave the Argos a 19-10 lead.

The game plan was to get Bruce the ball in open space as a means to take advantage of a Montreal defence that likes to crowd the box. It worked to perfection.

"People expected us to get shut out but things happen for a reason and we're going to the Grey Cup," Bruce said.

"We stuck to our game plan and emerged victorious. We studied film thoroughly all week. Guys prepared so well and we're so professional. You saw the finished product."

Despite an offence that has drawn its share of criticism, Bruce is confident going into the Grey Cup.

"We'll be facing another great team but we're capable of greatness as well."

Bruce certainly was last night.
