NANAIMO -- Eric Tillman is stuck in a very awkward position.
Anybody can see the current Saskatchewan Roughriders general manager is wedged between a rock and a hard place at a critical time of the CFL playoffs.
Although current head coach Danny Barrett is still talking with and receiving advice from fired GM Roy Shivers, Tillman isn't being critical of the relationship.
Needing just one more win in the West Final on Sunday to advance to the Grey Cup, the last thing the Riders need is the slightest signs of squabbling in the ranks.
So, it comes as no surprise that Tillman is taking the high road.
"I hope we win the Grey Cup for the good people of Saskatchewan," he said from his Mosaic Stadium office late yesterday, "and I don't care who gets the credit."
Tillman is also avoiding being critical of Shivers' work in Regina before he was fired in August.
But the bottom line - and it's an ugly one in the salary department - is the Riders have publicly admitted to being almost $700,000 over the salary cap this year. With the exception of a couple of player moves by the new regime this fall, that massive payroll is from Shivers' reign, leaving Tillman to hack and slash the payroll this off-season to be under the $4.05-million limit in 2007.
