OTTAWA - The CFL will hear no argument from the RedBlacks over the "maximum" fine levied on cornerback Jerrell Gavins for his "late and low hit" on Winnipeg quarterback Drew Willy last week.

Certainly not from head coach Rick Campbell, and not even from Gavins, who after forking over the $1,400 said he played the team's opener for "free."

He could have been exaggerating, but the minimum league salary is 50 grand, and he is a rookie ....

"It was 100% a penalty," head coach Rick Campbell said Tuesday. "He hit the guy low. The thing about it, not to make an excuse for him ... it wasn't done with malicious intent or anything like that. He just made a poor decision in the heat of the moment. That's what you learn from. He's new to this league and he understands that now."

Gavins was repentant.
