OTTAWA - At 5-foot-6, 150 lbs. -- 15 lbs. up from his college playing weight -- Jamill Smith has been told over and over he's too small to play football.

His family put up a $1,000 airplane ticket to Ottawa to prove the naysayers wrong.

"Somehow they found the money," said Smith. "We don't have the most money, but they came through. They've been like that my whole life."

If you hear 'You'll never make it. Never,' enough, maybe you turn to something else.

Not Smith. He didn't listen, he didn't quit. There were no calls from NFL or CFL teams after he wrapped up his excellent career at Ball State University in Muncie, IN.

So he made a call to the Ottawa RedBlacks, on a contact number dug up by an uncle. The RedBlacks had him on their original negotiation list some 17 months ago. Ottawa offered him a chance to try out. The catch was he had to get himself to Ottawa.
