As a high school senior, at tiny Lago Vista High School in Texas, Nate Menkin didn't much imagine himself playing college football, let alone later getting paid to do it.

His blueprint in Life 101 didn't include muscling up from 240 lbs. to more than 300. But it happened. He did it. An offensive lineman, he played in the NFL for the Philadelphia Eagles, then sat on the Houston Texans' practice squad last season, trying to block the likes of all-world defensive beast J.J. Watt. Last week, the 25-year-old Menkin signed a contract with the Ottawa RedBlacks, anxious to begin the next chapter of his football career in Canada.

Chalk it up to a desire to learn, to get better. And throw in good influences in how to conduct yourself in life — courtesy of his father Darryl, who played rugby, cricket and soccer, and his mother Marleen, who passed along lessons in determination and self-discipline before she died of breast cancer when Nate was 16. She never surrendered; neither has her oldest son.
