"Heave hi, heave hi ho

The best man in Ottawa was Mufferaw Joe

Mufferaw Joe

Big Joe Mufferaw paddled in to Mattawa

All the way from Ottawa just one day, Hey, Hey

On the river Ottawa the best man we ever saw

Was Big Joe Mufferaw the old folks say

Come an' listen I'll tell ya what the old folks say

And they say Big Joe had an old pet frog

Bigger than a horse an' he barked like a dog

And the only thing quicker than a train upon a track

Was Big Joe ridin' on the bullfrog's back."

Stompin' Tom Connors

Forty-something years ago, Stompin Tom Connors turned a legend into song — a timeless classic, an outrageously fictional account, loosely based on facts. Not sure what kind of a French-Canadian uproar there was at the time. Maybe they were saving it up.

I'd like to think logging legend Joseph Montferrand would be amused, maybe a bit ticked off, by the silly fuss kicked up over the naming of the RedBlacks mascot last week.

Maybe the tough-as-nails man's man would be embarrassed by the sensitivity — the misguided pride and pressure — that coerced the RedBlacks to change the name of their mascot on Monday. This all coming three days after 500 red-and-black-wearing students at a French school, Ecole Elementaire publique Kanata, cheered, hugged and high-fived the mascot.

Yep, say goodbye to Big Joe Mufferaw. And say hello to Big Joe or Grand Jos.

Don't get me wrong, as far as names go, I don't mind Big Joe and Grand Jos makes a lot of sense.

But to me, the mascot will be Big Joe Mufferaw. And I sure as hell hope the RedBlacks play the Stompin' Tom song.
