TAMPA -- Phil Esposito says he'd consider becoming involved in the ownership of the Ottawa Steelback.

"Maybe," the hockey legend and current Tampa Bay Lightning broadcaster said last night. "If it was with Frankie, maybe I would."

"Frankie" is Frank D'Angelo, the president and CEO of Steelback Brewery, and presently the only one showing public interest in resurrecting a CFL team in Ottawa.

D'Angelo is friends with Esposito, one of the former NHL greats he has with him in a beer commercial.

Esposito said D'Angelo asked him about buying into the Renegades a while back, but their conversation was sidetracked. He plans on calling D'Angelo back today. Esposito, who has lived in Florida for years, isn't exactly up on current CFL news.

"The Ottawa Renegades ... that's a soccer team, isn't it?" he asked.

When told that was the name of Ottawa's latest CFL entry, he replied: "Oh, I thought they were the Rough Riders."

Esposito does speak highly of D'Angelo, who he says should be taken seriously.

"Frankie's nutty, and I say that most affectionally because I really like him," said Esposito.

"He'd like to buy a hockey team, too. He loves hockey.

"If Frankie says he'll buy the football team, he'll do it."
