League failed us: Ex-Riders

CFL governors and commissioner Tom Wright must share the blame for the demise of the Renegades.

So says Jeff Avery, a former Rough Riders receiver who served as the Renegades radio analyst on the Team 1200.

"I hate to use the word complicity, but (the league) has involvement in the way the team has been run the past year," said Avery. "It's nine different owners doing things their own way, and it's not like we haven't seen that before."

Avery said several Riders alumni members were so disillusioned with the team that they refused to renew tickets for 2006.

"I got fed up and didn't pick up season tickets," former Riders running back Ron Stewart said last night. "I feel badly for the players and the coaches, but I couldn't get enthused about the Gliebermans."

Hall of Fame quarterback Russ Jackson said last night from his Burlington home that he fears it will be difficult for the team to start from scratch in 2007.

"It's just disappointing," said Jackson. "I just wonder how many times the Ottawa football fan is going to put up with this."
