Ottawa sports have a silver lining

Rod Rust is rumoured to be on his way to the Renegades as the new defensive co-ordinator under coach John Jenkins.

Rust, 76, would be right at home here. Is there a city with a more veteran group of sports figures than Ottawa?

There's Renegades GM Forrest Gregg (72), Senators GM John Muckler (71) and Ottawa 67's coach and GM Brian Kilrea (71).

Given their experience, silver should be an official colour of Ottawa's franchises.

HEAR AND THERE: So, the Senators couldn't convince the NHL to waive defenceman Zdeno Chara's one-game suspension for instigating a late fight with L.A. King Tim Gleason Friday night. You will remember Chara got a call from the NHL after a late punch in a fight with Montreal's Raitis Ivanans earlier this season. You think Chara had used up his get-out-of-jail-free card? ... Ottawa's Brad Smyth is just one goal away from becoming the 17th player in AHL history to score 300 goals. He recently picked up his 600th AHL point ... There's going to be a deodorant with the likeness of NASCAR champ Tony Stewart on it. That's cool, but does it have to smell like exhaust?

THE BUZZ: When they say Las Vegas is for high rollers, former star second baseman (couldn't have been the supplements, huh?) Brett Boone takes it a little too literally. According to a Vegas newspaper, he allegedly rolled his golf cart at the Wynn Las Vegas golf club and then rolled off a bar stool in the clubhouse after challenging some staff members ... Interesting to note -- in light of the Bloc Quebecois' desire for Quebec to have its own hockey team in the World Cup, etc. -- that the NHL's top-rated Canadian goaltenders born outside Quebec right now are Curtis Joseph and Manny Legace.

REVELATIONS: Kanata's Ashley Bickerton has lost her spot on the national women's amateur golf team ... Evander Holyfield is 43-years old, but he still wants to regain the heavyweight crown. Misguided? He can barely handle the contact in Dancing With The Stars ... Stephen Ames and Sergio Garcia have been confirmed for next summer's Telus Skins Game at Banff Springs. The other participants will be named later, but last year, behind the scenes, there was a big push on to line up Michelle Wie. Stay tuned.

SPECULATIONS: Ian Poulter (84th on the PGA Tour money list) was a disappointment for a lot of people in golf pools this year. He blames his crappy season on overseeing the construction of homes on both sides of the Atlantic. What's wrong with buying used? ... Cincinnati's Chad Johnson said he's going to come up with the best touchdown celebration ever when he scores against the Steelers today. Given past celebrations, that could be followed by the best fine ever from the NFL.

JUST WONDERING: When will Anaheim Ducks GM Brian Burke make his next move? Rumour is he will dump more salary (pack your bags J.S. Giguere) so he'll have a war chest for some summer shopping (re: Todd Bertuzzi) ... Don't know about you, but I thought the best "Look at me, look at me, I'm ... An Idiot" clip this week was the Giants' Jeremy Shockey guilty of premature celebration. All that was missing was a "Huh?" bubble over his head.

LET ME SAY THIS ABOUT THAT: The Houston Texans and the San Francisco 49ers meet on the NFL's final weekend and the top pick in the draft could be on the line. Call it the Bush Bowl.

NAPKIN NOTES: This week's real estate listing: Manny Ramirez has put his condo at the Ritz Carlton Penthouse building in Boston up for sale. He's asking $6.9 million. It has 4,500 square feet and six bathrooms. After watching Manny disappear behind the Green Monster for a potty break, guess a bathroom can never be too close ... One of the best headlines of the week: "Sinking Feely" in the New York Daily News after the Giants kicker missed three field goals and the Jints lost.

PARTING SHOT: According to WISH-TV in Chicago, the Western Open is going to be moving to Crooked Stick golf course in 2008 or 2010. The Western Open is sponsored by Cialis, the erectile dysfunction helper, so, as the marketers like to say, there's a synergy there.
