Joe Paopao will barely be out the door when the Renegades introduce John Jenkins as the new coach and GM next week.
Speaking from western Texas, Jenkins said he will arrive in Ottawa on Sunday and stay for a few days until a formal announcement, either Monday or Tuesday, is made.
"I couldn't be more excited about this," said the 53-year-old journeyman football man, known best for his unorthodox coaching style and a run-and-shoot offensive system.
PAOPAO ON WAY OUT
The 6-11 Renegades will play their last game of the season on Saturday at Frank Clair Stadium.
It will also be the final game for Joe Paopao, who has coached the team since its inception four years ago.
The eccentric Jenkins, who once graced the cover of Sports Illustrated, has a penchant for controversy both on and off the field.
In 1993, amid allegations of breaking NCAA recruiting rules and incidents where images of naked women were shown during film sessions, he resigned as coach of the University of Houston Cougars.
He said yesterday at least half a dozen coaches have contacted him since news broke last week that he would take over as Ottawa coach.
"I've told them all that I'm not going to discuss anything about these positions until the current coaches work their last ball game," said Jenkins.
