Ball hawk licking lips

Korey Banks is one confident dude.

And why wouldn't he be?

The Ottawa Renegades defensive back leads the league with a whopping seven interceptions in just eight games this season, and he has a good feeling he will add to that total tonight against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

"I know if they keep throwing over there, I'm going to get at least one," Banks said yesterday. "I don't know what their game plan is. They might run the ball all night. They might throw it wide. I don't know what they're going to do.

"But it seems like at crunch time they come at me, so I love that. I hope they do that."

Trying to prevent Banks from robbing them of completions will be the Bombers new-look receiving corps, which had the team's best outing of the season last week in a 44-14 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

"If we keep everybody involved, they can't key on anybody, and you know what Charlie (Roberts) is gonna bring," Bombers slotback Milt Stegall said. "So we just want to have all our weapons out there making plays.

"They've got some good defensive backs. There's some cocky, young guys -- I think some of them are young enough to be my son -- but they're out there playing well, they're gelling together, and we just have to go out there and make some plays and shut 'em up quick."

HOWELL'S HOME: Tonight's game will mark the return of Winnipeg native and former Bomber WR Markus Howell, who signed with the Renegades over the winter.

Many questioned his move then, but Ottawa's 5-3 start has silenced the critics.

"I got a couple of phone calls after I signed, guys saying, 'Man, what are you doin?' But a lot of us came from winning programs, so it's no surprise," said Howell, who has 11 catches for 193 yards.

"The guys we have on the field are used to winning. We're on our way."

LATE HITS: The Renegades have made three roster moves. LB Gerald Vaughn is in for DE Anthony Collier (concussion), PK Matt Kellett (groin) has been replaced by Mark Irvin, and WR Frank Cutolo comes on for RB Ka'Ron Coleman ... Winnipeg's only change is LB Scott Mennie replacing DT Martin Lapostolle ... The Renegades lead the CFL with 18 more takeaways than giveaways ... Ottawa RB Josh Ranek is fifth in league rushing with 475 yards. Roberts leads the loop with 662 yards ... Fans are encouraged to bring an unopened school supply item to tonight's game to support Staples' annual school supply drive for underprivileged children. Donors will be eligible to win an autographed Bombers jersey.
