Weight's over for 'Gades

The new-look Renegades are becoming a lean, mean machine.

Coach and GM Joe Paopao, who is excited to say this year's team is more physical than those he has had here in the past, has attacked the treadmill in the off-season. And the results show.

Paopao has lost 28 lbs., joining a slim-fast movement of Renegades employees that also includes quarterback Kerry Joseph (20 lbs.) and director of media relations Arash Madani (30 lbs.).

"I just feel better," said Paopao, who turns 50 on June 30.

Paopao says he still eats what he wants, but he's working it off harder. He started using the treadmill in the Renegades' weightroom when he was re-signed in January, and at that time he found it difficult to stay on for 10 minutes. Now, he regularly runs (or walks) on it for 60-90 minutes.

"Once you get into the routine ... ," he said. "You do it for yourself.

"I could probably lose another 10 pounds," he added. "I'm starting to fit into my 'younger' clothes."

EXTRA POINTS: The Renegades have flipped their offensive line around again. Rookie Marc Parenteau is back at the left tackle position, while Obby Khan has returns to right tackle, in a move that should stand for Game 1 in Edmonton on Friday. Khan worked out at left tackle Monday. "That's where (Parenteau) has been through training camp, we decided to swap them back," said Paopao, who acknowledges that an Edmonton line that features DE Joe Montford is "as good a crew as you're going to find." Said Paopao about Parenteau: "He's got his work cut out for him. We'll do some things to help him out, and go from there." .... The Renegades have released WR Curtis Jackson to make room for the more versatile Frank Cutolo. Jackson was a steady veteran who joined the team midway through last season. Cutolo will also serve as a return specialist for the Renegades ... G Val St. Germain will be able to play this week after giving a problematic groin its final test yesterday ... WRs Yo Murphy and Jason Armstead, as well as OLs Reggie Nelson and Morris Unotoa all missed practice yesterday to take care of some standard paperwork at the immigration office. They are expected back on the field today ... Comprising the Renegades practice roster will be OL Morris Unutoa, DL A.C. Collier, WR Robert Quiroga, DB D'Wayne Taylor and non-import LB Brian Oddi. DL Adrian Baird, a former Gee-Gee, is also expected to stick around as a non-counter.
