Where there's a will, there's a Hathaway

KEMPTVILLE -- Rookie Cory Hathaway has emerged as the Renegades' front-line fullback.

"He's been outstanding," coach/GM Joe Paopao said yesterday. "Right now, if we had to start, he's the guy."

Hathaway, a 21-year-old who was picked in the fourth round of the 2005 college draft, certainly has size on his side. But impressing Paopao most is the way the 6-foot-4, 242-pounder can block.

At Tulsa, Hathaway was a defensive end until 2003, when he was switched to a tight end. Playing that position in a similar system prepared the Lethbridge native for his first camp.

"This is a good fit for me," Hathaway said of his position with the Renegades, where the fullback often rolls out to a tight-end type set up.

"Hearing you're (a leading candidate for a job) makes you feel good, but right now I'm still a rookie who has to earn his stripes, keep doing what I'm doing and helping out wherever I can."

After Hathaway, Gilles Lezi is next on the depth chart. Lezi is a former Edmonton second-round pick who played 14 games last season, but was cut after the Eskimos signed free-agent Mike Maurer away from the Renegades.

HASH MARKS: The job of backup RB behind Josh Ranek appears to now be in the hands of Ka'Ron Coleman -- who was also an exceptional return specialist in college and in the NFL -- and not just because of his strong performance in Saturday's scrimmage. Herbert Goodman, the other candidate, has meniscus damage in his knee and could need athroscopic surgery that would keep him sidelined for 3-4 weeks ... Import DL Johnny Scott, who went back to his job at a freight company in Hamilton the day after the Ticats put him on waivers, is expected in Ottawa this week, but won't play in Thursday's pre-season opener in Montreal ... LB/FS Kyries Hebert has returned home on a personal matter and isn't expected back in time for the Als game, either ... PK Matt Kellett had what Paopao referred to as his "best day kicking the ball" at yesterday's practice. Pat Fleming also boomed a couple of kickoffs and connected on a pair of field goals from just inside the 40. Paopao noted the improvement in Fleming's placekicking, saying a year ago such attempts from Fleming endangered those who were standing beside him ... SB David Azzi missed yesterday's practice with a sore hamstring ... DE Kai Ellis (knee) is also doubtful for Thursday's game ... Ranek and SB Yo Murphy missed yesterday's practice to play in a charity golf tournament.
