Ottawa Banks on new CB

The one guarantee Korey Banks will make is that the Hamilton Tiger-Cats won't score 50 points tomorrow at Ivor Wynne Stadium.

What he doesn't realize is that their quarterback could very well finish the night with 50,000 passing yards.

In his 15th CFL season, Danny McManus is just 299 yards short of joining Damon Allen and Ron Lancaster as the only QBs in league history to hit the 50,000 plateau.

Making his CFL debut, Banks will be counted on to play a significant role in stopping him as the Renegades take to the field for the first of what they hope will be three do-or-die battles.

"I like to make predictions, but let me see my first game and then I'll let you know," said the confident cornerback, who spent last season on the Miami Dolphins practice roster and has been in Canada just two weeks. "I predict they won't score 50."

A similar statement came back to haunt Banks before.

As a junior with Mississippi State Bulldogs, Banks says he was quoted making a pre-game promise that Steve Spurrier's Florida Gators wouldn't score 50 against his team. The Gators won 52-0.

Banks is sure Spurrier ran up the score just to make him eat the words.

"Spurrier did say (in the paper) that the key to beating Mississippi State is to not let Banks get on fire," he remembered. "I was like, 'Who me?'

"I can't score 52 points."

Banks will take the roster spot of Serge Sejour, who has swelling in his knee and is coming off a game in which he took three costly penalties.

In other moves, DE Kai Ellis will step in for A.C. Collier, OL Mike Sutherland will replace S/LB Shawn Gallant (knee) and QB Tyler Joseph will fill for QB Kerry Joseph (collarbone).

Coach Joe Paopao has elected to give import K Brian Holmes another week, but non-import Demetrius Scouras could get a shot next week in Montreal.

EXTRA POINTS: Like the rest of the league, Ottawa was inactive as yesterday's CFL trade deadline came and went.
