Imagine an NHL player playing about 160 games a year.
Or a baseball player playing about 350.
Renegades defensive back Jonathon Ordway is attempting to do the pigskin equivalent as he moves from the Arena Football League to the CFL.
Ordway, 25, will make his Ottawa debut tonight after spending the spring in the AFL with the Tampa Bay Storm.
"It's taxing on the body, obviously, playing 30 games in a year at least, maybe more," said Ordway. "But I take good care of myself and I wouldn't do it if I didn't feel I was physically capable of performing at a high level in both leagues."
Ordway benefits from getting a paycheque in both leagues, but that's not why he does it.
"The main thing is I'm trying to get NFL opportunities. There's guys looking at you in this league, but I think it's better if you've got the eyes of two sets of coaches on you. I think you can attract more attention."
Renegades coach Joe Paopao said he will closely monitor both Ordway and defensive end Kai Ellis, who is also making his first start of the season tonight.
"We'll have to monitor his playing time and make sure he doesn't get wound down," said Paopao.
WHITE IN SHINING ARMOUR: Renegades linebacker Tony White has been quietly getting the job done. While he hasn't gotten much fanfare, he's been noticed by the coaches (that's what counts, folks). "We're talking about everybody else, but he's part of that cog of guys. He's part of the puzzle. Guys are making plays because maybe he's taking on two blocks," said Paopao. "He's doing what he has to do and if he breaks free, he's part of the tackle group. I like what I see from that young man." White's dropped about 10 lbs. from last year. He said he wanted to get a "six-pack" like teammate Ordway, who was standing nearby. "I had a keg last year," he said. "I've gotten better. Now I'm down to about an eight-pack."
SUITE DEAL: Renegades receiver Pat Woodcock's Suite 16 initiative will see 16 kids from Gloucester Recreation Development Organization attend tonight's game. The organization gives socially or economically disadvantaged kids aged 5-14 the chance for low-cost recreational sport skills development.
PRIOR ENGAGEMENT: Vince Lombardi would love this one. Eskimos OL Carlo Panaro is missing tonight's game so he can attend his sister's wedding. He's been put on the suspended list for this week. That opens the door for Amarpreet Sanghera to dress for his first game. Actually, Lombardi, the legendary tyrant, might have been okay with it if Panaro brought him back a piece of wedding cake.
