OTTAWA - Most CFL coaching staffs have been named and are already hard at work, teams are conducting tryout camps all over the U.S., and free agency is just around the corner.

Which makes you wonder: What in the world is going on in Montreal?

It’s early February, and the Als still don’t have a head coach. They didn’t have a field general last year at this time, either, but the situation was different because Marc Trestman had just been hired away to lead the NFL’s Chicago Bears.

All indications are general manager Jim Popp would like to continue as head coach, a role he assumed when Dan Hawkins was fired five games into the 2013 season, but all he can do is wait and continue to work on his GM duties.

“We’re functioning as normal,” Popp said Wednesday. “We don’t have an official coach named. Whether I’m the coach or somebody else, we haven’t gotten to that point. That’s Mr. (Bob) Wetenhall’s decision."
