Ottawa Rough Riders legend Jay Roberts has died after a battle with lung cancer. He was 68.

Roberts passed away Wednesday night at 11:05 p.m. at the General hospital.

“His heart just stopped beating,” said close friend Brian Doyle.

Roberts’ family were able to say their farewells on Sunday, after he had taken a turn for the worse.

On Thursday, “his eyes were closed,” recalled Doyle, “but he said in his wry way, ‘Not yet.’ ”

Roberts was a tight end for the Riders from 1964-1970, during which time he helped the team win two Grey Cups.

Roberts, who suffered from aggressive small-cell lung cancer, reflected on the future in an interview with Ottawa Sun columnist Earl McRae in July.

“I don’t worry about dying. Why would I worry?” he asked. “I don’t know what it is. I haven’t been there before.”
