Ledbetter's ex trying to cope

OTTAWA – He never said goodbye to his baby girl.

For Cody Ledbetter's ex-girlfriend, despite the yellowing shiner beneath her eye and the still-visible scratches on her shoulder, allegedly the handiwork of Ledbetter, that's what stings the most. "I was just upset that he didn't say goodbye to his daughter, that just kind of sent me in to a downward spiral," said the woman.

Her name was made public in court Thursday, but she spoke with QMI Agency on the condition she is not identified.

"I mean, he told all these other girls that he was going to turn himself in. That's how I found out. One of his girlfriend's brothers texted me to say Cody turned himself in, so I called the police station and they said it's true," she said. "Then I just lost it, because he never even said goodbye to his own kid." She was dismayed to learn that Ledbetter's defence attorney, Mark Ertel, was not only going to fight local charges of partner assault and uttering threats, but that Ertel was also preparing to fight an extradition order from Texas, where Ledbetter is wanted for breaching a 2005 probation sentence related to sex crimes with an underage girl.

Police in Ottawa, where he's been in hiding since September, had been hunting for him since Saturday, when the partner assault unit showed up at his Canterbury Ave. address to find his ex-girlfriend beaten.

The woman said Ledbetter had been working for a construction company in Stittsville, getting paid under the table and storing the money away: "I guess in case anything ever happened," she said.

"That's another thing that pisses me off. He's been getting all this money for the past four months and here I am struggling to make ends meet and I haven't gotten a dime from him. Now he can hire the best lawyer there is, he's got this great attorney who might get him off, and here I am I can't even buy groceries and I'm just struggling to get (baby) formula for my daughter." Victim Services has been working on getting the woman a work permit and getting her set up with Canadian health insurance benefits.

"Being three-and-a-half months pregnant and coming here straight from Texas, I don't have a health card, so I haven't even been to see a doctor (for the pregnancy)," she said.

She's also saving up money in case she needs to get legal help for herself.

"If this lawyer (Ertel) turns it around that I did anything (to Ledbetter) then I need my daughter taken care of," she said.

"I don't want to have anything to do with him," she said. "If Cody gets off and they don't extradite him, I don't know if I want to be in the same vicinity as he is," she said.

"I'm saving every newspaper so when (my daughter) asks me one day, then she can know the truth. She's only a year old, so she doesn't understand what's going on, but one day she will."
