Kinda stuff it takes to win

Barron Miles could see all these youngsters stuffing kickers and knew it was just a matter of time before he got in on the action.

It so happened the B.C. Lions safety set a record in what has become his own style in a timely spot.

While eight other players have recorded blocked kicks this season through the first four weeks, Miles was just biding his time.

As the Saskatchewan Roughriders were lining up for a late extra point while trailing 28-20 to the B.C. Lions Friday, Miles came flying down, jumped the long-snapper and stuffed the Luca Congi attempt.

The block was Miles' 13th in his storied CFL career, moving him past Gerald Vaughn for the all-time mark.

Miles started that move a couple years ago and it's a tricky one. If he hits the snapper, he will get penalized.

Most of the blocks this season were the fault of the kicking team in missed assignments, but Miles' move is tough to defend if he does it well.

"It has to be picture perfect," Miles said, adding stuffing a punt is toughest of all. "In the CFL, you are a yard off the ball and without that yard, it's hard to get a punt block.

"Being a yard off is extremely tough. So you have to be picture perfect to get there."

Opening drive

Although Milt Stegall just joined TSN this season, it seems they forgot he played last season. When Ben Cahoon moved up to No. 7 in all-time receiving yardage, TSN showed the all-time list, but had Allen Pitts still at No. 1. They forgot Stegall passed Pitts last season and didn't add up his 458 yards from 2008. It could have been awkward had Stegall worked the game as a studio analyst ... Week 6 was tough on the middle linebacker position. Roughriders LB Rey Williams left the loss in B.C. and is gone for up to 10 weeks with an MCL tear. The Eskimos lost Maurice Lloyd to a hamstring injury at Hamilton, while Winnipeg's Barrin Simpson stayed on the turf twice battling what coach Mike Kelly said was chest-shoulder pain. The worst night might have been Calgary's Tray Blackmon, who had no answer for the Bombers rushing attack that piled up 232 total yards along the ground ... How is this for scheduling? The Eskimos are one game into a five-outing span where they play just two opponents (Hamilton and Calgary).

Endzone toss

The shutout of the Argos is really no surprise, but it hasn't happened in a long time for the Alouettes. The Als hadn't blanked an opponent since 1976, when they also beat the Argos, but Toronto was last held off the scoresheet in 1992. The last one in the CFL was Winnipeg beating Hamilton 29-0 July 28, 2006 ... Stamps SB Nik Lewis replied to a question about his demands for the ball by saying his defence should all want to make tackles. To do that, they should have a money jar the way the Eskimos have set up for whoever gets the team's first interception. "That way they would all go out and play hard," Lewis said ... Stamps QB Henry Burris needs just 239 passing yards to eclipse Doug Flutie (20,551) for most in franchise history. Burris needs nine TD passes to tie Flutie as well.

Extra points

Stamps FB Teyo Johson now has a 4-0 record against brother Riall Johnson, a defensive end with Winnipeg. That includes one NFL start ... The Stamps have started every season since 2005 with a 3-3 record ... The Eskimos haven't had a three-game win streak since the playoffs in 2005 ... Thompson to Tisdale isn't just a terrible road trip anymore. And the lateral between Ticats DBs Chris Thompson and Geoff Tisdale had much more scenery than the drive between the Manitoba-Saskatchewan cities.
