TSN's numbers are down

The CFL playoffs on TSN aren't exactly a smash hit in the ratings.

In its first year broadcasting post-season games, TSN didn't reach their goal of one million viewers for either semifinal game last weekend.

The East Division semifinal involving the Edmonton Eskimos and Winnipeg Blue Bombers last Saturday attracted just 610,000 viewers, down 38% from last year when CBC showed the division semi on a Sunday.

The Saskatchewan-B.C. West Division semifinal brought 862,000 viewers in the late afternoon time slot on Saturday, down just slightly from last year. A broadcast source indicates the East semifinal is down so much because the southern Ontario market isn't interested.

The Toronto Argos and Hamilton Tiger-Cats are the only CFL teams that failed to qualify for the post-season.

There was plenty of CFL interest in Toronto - Canada's largest city - last year because the Grey Cup was at Rogers Centre.
