Up to old tricks

The man who calls himself Geronimo to get pumped up for CFL games continued his verbal onslaught of the Edmonton Eskimos last week.

Last year, Calgary receiver Nik Lewis claimed that Edmonton defensive back Shannon Garrett could not cover him man-to-man. Last week, the brash young Stamp took aim at veteran Eskimo receiver Ed Hervey.

"He was a good receiver five years ago," the Edmonton Sun quoted Lewis. "Times come and times go."

Hervey did not take the insult lying down.

"Last year, he singled out Shannon Garrett and Shannon Garrett chewed him up," Hervey told the Edmonton Journal.

Garrett held Lewis to 28 yards on two receptions that playoff game.

"He has proven he has no class," Hervey said. "What's his point? Is it that he has no (Grey Cup) ring? Is he jealous?

"At some point, he is going to be taken behind the woodshed and somebody's going to teach him a lesson."

And all that trash talk annoys Calgary head coach (Timid) Tom Higgins to no end.

"I'd prefer their actions speak louder than words," said the former Edmonton head coach.

"(But Eskimos CEO) Hugh Campbell always used to tell me, 'We don't want everyone to be like Tom Higgins. We'd have a very boring team.' And he's right."

Hervey, by the way, caught nine passes for 115 yards in a losing cause to Calgary on Saturday. Lewis had four receptions for 67 yards, including the game-winning touchdown in the waning moments.

Afterwards, Hervey gave Lewis a pat on the back.

"There was never any controversy, it was a mixup with quotes," Hervey claimed. "Football is game mentally where you try to get inside the other guy's head. We both had pretty good games but his team won. That's the end of it."

Somehow, we doubt that.

B.C. ON BLOCK: First, it is for sale, then it isn't for sale, then it is.

Initially, B.C. Lions owner David Braley denied a Globe and Mail report that his CFL club was on the block for around $15 million -- vehemently.

"In truth, the franchise is for sale, yes," Braley later told TEAM 1040, the team's broadcaster, the Vancouver Province reported.

In fact, Braley is apparently weighing the merits of an offer he received two weeks ago but said he would not sell the franchise to just anyone.

"They've got to have the caring, the passion for the franchise and for the league and for the city," Braley told the Vancouver Sun. "I've got to have the feeling in my gut that they're the right person."

That person would also have to be one who opposes CFL commissioner Tom Wright and any type of salary-cap penalty.
