CFL Week 1 Picks

JIM BENDER, KIRK PENTON, PAUL FRIESEN and TED WYMAN -- Winnipeg Sun

, Last Updated: 8:18 AM ET

(Note: This year sports editor Ted Wyman throws his hat into the prediction ring. However, his picks will be done in a most unscientific fashion -- the flip of a coin. Later we can compare how the magic toonie matches up against the experts).

WEEK 1

FRIDAY

Winnipeg at Montreal, TSN 6:30 p.m.

Bender: The Don will be determined to teach his student, the Big Blue Berry, a lesson. He will. This time. Alouettes.

Penton: The Bombers are going to be a better team -- eventually. Unfortunately for them, the Alouettes are currently the better team. Alouettes.

Friesen: This is not the place you want to break in a defence with seven or eight new starters on it. Anthony Calvillo must be drooling like a cocker spaniel at Thanksgiving. Montreal by a mittful.

Wyman's coin flip: Winnipeg.

Saskatchewan at B.C., TSN 9:30 p.m.

Bender: TSN celebrates its 10th anniversary with the CFL with this doubleheader and Million Dollar Dave, should give the Grinnin' Barrett fits now that he doesn't have to worry about Casey coming to bat. Lions.

Penton: It will also take the Roughies a little while to get going, and Dave Dickenson should be in fine form. Lions.

Friesen: As long as Dave Dickenson remains upright, I'm not sure there's a reason to pick the Leos to lose one at home. B.C.

Wyman's coin flip: Saskatchewan.

SATURDAY

Hamilton at Toronto, CBC 2 p.m.

Bender: How fitting. Ricky Williams will make his CFL debut in the Big Smoke in a stadium once called the SkyDome. Should be high times for Boatmen fans. Argos.

Penton: How will Ricky Williams fare, and how will Jason Maas look in Black and Gold? All questions that will be answered in time, so for now, we'll go with the league's defending most outstanding player -- Damon Allen. Argos.

Friesen: The Argos haven't looked ready in the pre-season, so we'll give the early battle of Ontario to the Ticats. Hamilton in a squeaker.

Wyman's coin flip: Hamilton.

Edmonton at Calgary, TSN 9 p.m.

Bender: Don't let that pre-season fool ya, Major Tom will have his Stamps back on ground control and the reigning Grey Cup champs already have some problems. Stamps by 3.

Penton: Were the Stamps playing possum last week when the Lions throttled them? Maybe not, but they're not that bad, and the Eskimos have many questions. Stampeders.

Friesen: I disagree. The Stamps are the ones who'll have some early problems, until their egos get a reality check. Edmonton.

Wyman's coin flip: Calgary.
