Water woes put boots to Als kicker

Damon Duval had one of those weeks last week.

The Montreal Alouettes kicker from Morgan City, La., first had to worry about his family being affected by hurricane Katrina.

Then he had to worry about flooding of his own.

The Montreal Gazette reported that Duval, whose family was safe and sound in the wake of Katrina, got a call from his landlord on Wednesday while he was at Olympic Stadium for practice.

Montreal had been hit by a massive rain storm, and his 10th-floor corner apartment had sprung some serious leaks.

Duval got home to find his landlord and firefighters in his living room cleaning up the mess.

"It's definitely been a strange week," Duval told the Gazette. "I come home to find people in my living room, sweeping up the floor and getting the water out.

"But I know the damage (in the southern U.S.) is a lot worse."

He had left a laptop computer and video game on the floor, but they were scooped up by the landlord before they could be damaged.

His couch sustained water damage and several pieces of clothing were soiled.

"Compared to Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi, it's no big deal," Duval said.

LABOUR DAY LABOURS: The Winnipeg Football Club received several phone calls yesterday from upset Bomber fans complaining about the lack of security at Sunday's Labour Day Classic.

The callers said the scene in the Taylor Field stands was worse than European soccer, they complained about the abundance of marijuana and profanity, and one was upset after getting hit by a watermelon that someone had transformed into a fruity helmet.

One WFC staffer, who sprained her ankle in Regina and was in the crowd Sunday night, had the foam tops of her crutches returned to her by a security guard just as the game was ending.

Someone had stolen them and tossed them on the field without her knowledge.

Meanwhile, in Hamilton following the Ticats-Argos game, Toronto coach Pinball Clemons and president Keith Pelley were talking to six police officers, and cops were in the Argos dressing room an hour after the game.

One report said Argos receiver Robert Baker was accosted by a fan after the game, while another said he threw his helmet into the stands and hit someone with it.

Can't we all just get along?

CLASSIC MOMENT: A Roughrider fan was being interviewed on Taylor Field's video scoreboard during the Labour Day Classic on Sunday night.

When he said that his favourite Roughrider was Henry Burris, however, the sound mysteriously cut out.

AROUND THE LEAGUE...

B.C. Lions

- Wally Buono knows how to coach. The 9-0 Leos run the width of the field at practice for each penalty they took in the previous game. They have cut their penalty yardage by 42% from last season.

Calgary Stampeders

- The Red and White cut RB Ronney Jenkins. The Stamps were unable to trade the former NFL return specialist, according to the Calgary Sun.

Edmonton Eskimos

- RB Michael Jenkins, the former Alouette and Argonaut who made his Green and Gold debut Monday against the Stampeders, had 30 yards on just eight carries in their 25-23 win.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats

- Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Shaun King was invited to Monday's game against the Argos. "If I wasn't interested (in the Tabbies), I wouldn't be here," King told the Hamilton Spectator.

Montreal Alouettes

- Rookie WR Kerry Watkins has stepped up following an injury to Ben Cahoon and the trade of Kwame Cavil. Watkins has 317 receiving yards and two touchdowns in his last three games.

Ottawa Renegades

- The Ottawa Sun reports the team will sell 20,000 leftover beads from its failed Mardi Gras promotion and donate the proceeds to the Red Cross for hurricane Katrina victims.

Saskatchewan Roughriders

- Sunday's win over the Bombers, which snapped a five game losing streak, was just what the doctor ordered, according to DT Scott Schultz. "It's like we've been reborn." he told The Leader-Post.

Toronto Argonauts

- The Boatmen have brought OL Danny Frame back to the fold after drafting him and then not re-signing him this season. Frame was briefly with the Bombers.
