MONTREAL - The Montreal Alouettes added Michael Sam to their negotiation list, and general manager Jim Popp makes no secret that he would like the defensive end to join his team.

The first openly gay player to be drafted by an NFL team, Sam was released by the Rams on Saturday. No club has claimed him, which means that he is now free to join the team of his choice.

"Michael is on our list of negotiations," Popp said in an interview. "However, we are early in the process. I have not talked to Michael, or his agent. ... But you never know."

Popp has only praise for Sam, who showed he can perform during preseason games with the Rams.

"It is exceptional to apply pressure on the opponent's quarterback ... and he had at least one sack in every game of the NFL preseason," said Popp. "And again, he moves quickly for a guy like him. I think his style would suit the Canadian Football League."
