MONTREAL - Montreal Alouettes quarterback Anthony Calvillo, out since the summer with a concussion, will not return this season.

General Manager and Head Coach Jim Popp confirmed the news to reporters on Friday.

Calvillo, the CFL's all-time leading passer, had joined his teammates for practice on Wednesday, but remained on the sidelines and was seen talking with other injured players.

At the time, he had suggested he might be on the verge of returning.

"It's part of the process," Calvillo told QMI Agency. "There's a plan to follow and I'm taking the steps one at a time. Today (Wednesday), was a big step forward. I haven't encountered any problems since we spoke last week. Everything is going well."

Calvillo has been struggling with concussion symptoms ever since Ricky Foley of the Saskatchewan Roughriders tackled him during a 24-21 Als loss on August 17 in Regina.

Calvillo had completed 115 of 196 passes for 1,322 yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions this season. The Alouettes are currently 6-9 and in third place in the CFL's East Division.

With reserve Tanner Marsh nursing an injury of his own, the Als might have to turn to backup Troy Smith for the time being.

The former NCAA Heisman Trophy winner could get the start on Sunday when the Als take on the Hamilton Tiger -Cats at Percival Molson Stadium.

It would be the first career CFL start for the former San Francisco 49ers pivot.

Neiswander, Calvillo's other backup, has had his problems in the pocket, throwing three interceptions last week in a 34-27 loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Marsh could be on the verge of returning to action after suffering a torn ligament in his right thumb.

The Alouettes' final hope at quarterback is Alex Brink, who plays on the practice squad.
