The big news of the past seven days happened during the bye week in Montreal, where owner Bob Wetenhall had seen enough underachieving from his Alouettes and fired head coach Dan Hawkins.

It was quite obvious that Hawkins was not cut out to be a CFL head coach, and maybe he wasn't ready to be a professional sideline boss. It was, after all, his first pro gig as well.

You have to give Wetenhall credit for not wasting time. He didn't think it was going to work, so he got rid of him.

The decision to throw GM Jim Popp in the head coaching role was an interesting call. Popp hasn't had the best results doing both jobs, and they had a former head coach in Doug Berry already hanging around the offices as the advisor to Hawkins. Apparently his advice wasn't being heard, however, which is part of the reason why we're where we are today.

Giving control of the offence to Berry was probably the best move of the week in Montreal.
