MONTREAL -- The Montreal Alouettes will go as far as Anthony Calvillo will take them this season.

That might be too simplistic, but it's clear the 15-year veteran quarterback is the most critical piece to the Als' puzzle.

After missing five regular-season games and the playoffs last season -- three due to a shoulder injury halfway through the year and the remaining because of his wife's battle with cancer -- the 35-year-old appears set to start this year on a better note.

"Everything is going well," said Calvillo when asked about his health at the end of training camp.

"My shoulder has been great. There's no issue whatsoever."

For the last two seasons, Calvillo has failed to reach the 5,000-yard passing mark. This came after four straight years -- 2002-2005 -- where he surpassed that respected yardage total.

Good news on the home front will certainly help put his mind at ease on the football field this year.

He left the team after Week 16 and didn't return last fall because of his wife's health problems.

"The cancer (is) pretty much gone," Calvillo reported on his wife. "We are committed to the whole (football) season." But she still has radiation treatments to come and any battle with cancer can turn in a heartbeat.
