At the mention of Ricky Ray’s name, Kent Austin couldn’t help but chuckle.

It wasn’t a sarcastic laugh on the part of Austin, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats general manager and head coach, on Tuesday afternoon at the team’s offices following practice at McMaster University.

It was more a nervous giggle, as Austin knows fully what Ray, the Toronto Argonauts’ quarterback back and leader of the defending Grey Cup champions, is capable of doing to his football team in the 2013 Canadian Football League regular-season opener at the Rogers Centre on Friday night.

Does Austin like that the Ticats are facing the challenge of Ray in the first game of the season?

“No,” Austin said, emitting the chuckle. “Why would I? He’s a great quarterback. I have been a fan of his for a long time. He understands the game, is accurate, he is tough, he is durable. You would not think he is as elusive as he is, but he breaks a lot of tackles and extends the play quite a bit.”
